A referral is necessary for an appointment, and is required by Medicare or your private health fund for a rebate. A GP referral is valid for 12 months, and a specialist for 3 months.

For all appointments you will need:

  • your Medicare card
  • private health fund details
  • the referral from your GP or specialist
  • claim number (for workers’ compensation, Third Party and public liability patients)
  • DVAcard (if applicable)
  • a list of your current medications
  • a list of any known allergies
  • PATS travel forms for authorisation by your surgeon (for country patients).

Fees and charges

The fees charged by SPORTSMED·SA orthopaedic surgeons are comparable with other private specialists. If you have a concession card, please advise your surgeon at the time of your consultation. Please note that SPORTSMED·SA is a private treating clinic and concession benefits may not apply.

Full payment of your account is due on the day of your consultation. SPORTSMED·SA can send this to Medicare on your behalf. If you are unable to settle your account on the day, please discuss this with your surgeon during your consultation. If you have a workers’ compensation or insurance claim, you can elect to take the account, or we can mail it for you.

When surgery is recommended you will be given a comprehensive financial quotation for the operation, hospital fees and incidental charges at the time of booking.

If your injury is compensable, please provide staff with your claim number, the name of your claim manager and lawyer and the date of the injury. SPORTSMED·SA must receive prior written approval, confirming that all costs will be covered, before your operation can be booked. In the event that this is not received, surgery may be cancelled. In the event that surgery proceeds, you are financially responsible for all costs in relation to your surgery.
